Event Description

Transition: another way to say Permaculture. The focus on the Transition Initiative is dealing with Peak Oil, Climate Change, and the Economic Crisis. This involves getting the tools needed for creating food, fuel, water, and job security within our own amazing communities. This class is a must do for anyone who wants to make a serious change in our communities and our lives.

Workshop: Designed to provide a detailed introduction to the skills necessary to successfully set up, develop, and run a Transition project in any locality. Designed for people who are already in a group that is working to achieve this or who are thinking of creating such a group.

The training comes out of the community experience of Totnes, England, a town leading an expanding worldwide network of communities desiring to lessen their dependence on fossil fuels create more resiliency to withstand the economic and ecological shocks coming from our industrial-growth economic system.

The Transition Town organization just recently merged with the Post Carbon Institute and thus is one of the most important sources of education and guidance for communities worldwide preparing to transition to more localized and sustainable economies.

At the end of the course, participants will:
◆ Have a clear understanding of the current global context for transition arising from climate change and peak oil and gas
◆ Understand the Transition Town model
◆ Have experiences of joint visioning, using Open Space, and organizing effective meetings
◆ Understand the purpose and principles of an Energy Descent Plan
◆ Have the outline of an effective and inspiring talk on Transition Towns
◆ Have an initial plan of action for themselves and their community

Who should attend: Those wanting to take on leadership roles within their communities, and other sustainability projects-students, educators, activists, planners, community organizers, concerned citizens, permaculture and sustainability practitioners, green economy activists, etc.

Special Treat: A free lecture by Paul Edwards on
Overcoming Institutional Barriers to Sustainability: Four Steps to Restoring
Local Community Resilience

Overcoming Institutional Barriers to Sustainability is an inspiring and informative presentation by best-selling author and public affairs consultant Paul Edwards on how local communities can change laws and ordinances so they don’t hinder but ease and encourage the shift to a sustainable, resilient, locally-based way of life.

Paul’s presentation covers four steps local communities need to make to recast local policy towards sustainability. The steps are:

1. Step One: What’s in the Way of Transition?

2. Step Two: Where to Start: Deciding What to Focus On

3. Step Three: Choosing How to Invest Your Energy

4. Step Four: What Methods Do You Use?

Paul identifies the major targets for reform and discuss underlying strategic approaches and key resistances to overcome. He describes tools such as strategic social marketing, lobbying, ballot initiatives, and campaigns to elect slates of local officials.

Paul has worked with a wide range of corporate, governmental and non-profit organizations throughout his career. During the past four years, he has been instrumental in organizing and launching Let’s Live Local, a Transition Initiative in Pine Mountain Club, CA, now the 11th official US Transition Initiative. He has also completed Training for Transitions workshops as well as other sustainability training programs.

Paul’s consulting includes assistance with ballot initiatives and campaigns for electing slates of local officials with the vision to lead their community into a sustainable future. You can see a fuller description of his services and background on his web site at www.publicaffairsservices.com He is co-author, with his wife Sarah Edwards, of “Middle Class Lifeboat.”

We have confirmed July 16 and 17th, due to popular vote. Thanks! Now let's get the word out. We need 10 people to break even, if we get 20 people we can offer a couple of scholarships, or discounts to everyone, or both. Lets get some more people on board!
